  1. Jan 28, 2015  'Liquor & Poker' is a really solid melodic rock release, and had it been released several years prior, who knows what could have happened. The overall sound of the record is undoubtedly melodic rock, with a hint of the hair metal sound sprinkled in as well.

Emil Kovacs of Linden (hands at right) fiddles with his chips while playing poker Tuesday night at Poker Palace Room in Burton. The charitable gaming firm plans to open its hall to hardship cases to raise money for individuals in need. 'Out of all the poker rooms in Michigan, we're the only one that pushes charities the way charities should be pushed,' said owner Al Crossnoe. 'We're just trying to give back.'

BURTON, Michigan -- Know someone with a severe illness whose expenses are not covered by insurance? How about a family displaced by a home fire?
The Poker Palace Room, a charitable gaming hall at 1110 E. Bristol Road, wants to help.
David Kile, the director of operations, said the organization is seeking hardship cases to donate its proceeds to.
It could mean possibly thousands of dollars, depending on the number of gamblers.

Hardship fundraisers

To qualify for a hardship fundraiser at the Poker Palace Room, the recipient must have expenses from:

• a severe illness not covered in whole by insurance; or

• a sudden catastrophic event, such as a storm or fire; or

• another type of extreme hardship condition; and

• be a Michigan resident.

• DETAILS: (810) 76P-OKER.

'There are so many people who need help, and this could make a difference,' Kile said.
The beneficiary would receive 80 percent of proceeds, with the Poker Palace Room taking 20 percent toward dealers' pay and other expenses, he said.
'The 20 percent probably won't even cover our overhead,' Kile said, 'but we want to start seeing some good things happening.'
How do you sign up? Just call the gaming hall at (810) 767-6537 and explain the situation. If the cause is approved, a date will be set for a fundraiser featuring poker, blackjack and roulette games.
Cases with immediate needs can be booked right away, Kile said. Family members and friends will be asked to hand out fliers advertising the benefit, and to come to the event to collect the cash.
Because the hall is open to the public seven days a week, beneficiaries could raise a significant amount of money even without a large crowd of their own invitees.
Helping cases of extreme hardship is a new program at the Poker Palace Room, which has been raising money for nonprofit groups for 1 1/2 years -- about $2 million in total, Kile said.
Area service clubs such as the Moose Lodge, and school and church groups are among those who have raked in cash from the Poker Palace Room.
The proceed split with nonprofits is 50/50, Kile said.
'It has helped us tremendously,' said John Schantz II, Bentley superintendent. 'All of our fund-raising activities have been hard-pressed. This is something people like and are willing to help out.'
The Bentley School District raised just under $69,000 in a year at the gaming hall, said Bentley Board of Education member Mike McCollum, who books nonprofits for the gaming hall.
'I've told them, 'Your days of collecting pop cans are done,' McCollum said. 'When something sounds too good to be true it probably is, but this really is the greatest fundraiser to come along.'
State law on charitable gaming changed a few years ago to allow gamers to set up permanent 'casinos' in halls. They can even offer liquor, if served by a separate firm with a liquor license.
Before, gaming had to take place in the nonprofits' quarters, said Al Crossnoe, owner of the Poker Palace Room.
Nonprofit groups apply to the state for licenses, which if approved each allow four days of gambling. The Poker Palace Room is booked through the end of 2009, Kile said.
Nonprofits that work with the Poker Palace Room will be asked to donate one of their days so that a hardship fundraiser can be hosted, Kile said.
Charitable gaming is a growing business, with five other gaming halls in the area opening recently, Kile said.
'It's the Texas Hold 'Em (TV poker shows) explosion,' Crossnoe said. 'That's what has made this take off.'
